The barbaric incident, whether as a part of premeditated conspiracy or not, deserves strongest condemnation. National Institute of Personnel Management, Delhi Chapter held an emergency meeting yesterday and was unanimous in condemning the incident. The Chapter members also prayed for the peace and tranquility of the departed soul of our colleague, Awanish Kumar Dev. We also wished the speedy recovery of those injured in the incident. Our hearts go out to the family members, near and dear ones and we express our solidarity with them and pray that God gives strength to them to bear the loss. We have also written to the Chief Minister of Haryana to ensure speedy justice to the suffering family.

Let us, however, make sure that the sacrifice made by Awanish Dev does not go waste. To my mind, the real tribute to him will be to bring about a paradigm shift in our approach to human relations in the industry. The first and foremost priority should be to bring about a change in the perspective of the government. It should be able to distinguish between a criminal act and an IR issue. No criminal action should go unpunished in the name of industrial relations. The second most important issue to be addressed is the extent of differentiation in remuneration between the direct labor and contract labor. No doubt, these are complex issues and would require a deft handling by all the stake holders, i.e. employers, trade unions and the Government.

HR will have to play a crucial role in bringing about this change. Time is running out. Let us put our heads and acts together to meet up with the imminent challenges before it is too late.
