HR Leaders have the power to influence company culture and they also ensure that an organization's culture stays relevant. A key role of HR Leaders is to ensure that the organization has the right people performing well in leadership roles at all levels. This means HR Leaders must focus on some areas such as job architecture, incumbent assessment, performance definition, recognition for success, and building leadership capacity.

A company’s corporate culture influences everything from productivity and ethics to engagement and brand reputation/identity. For HR Leaders, it is important to analyze how culture impacts the bottom line and what steps businesses can take to periodically evaluate.

It is impossible to produce or replace culture overnight, but HR Leaders play a very crucial role in driving the culture of the company. HR Leaders ensure that the company understands employee concerns and also takes actions by organizing feedback loop via surveys or asking employees to share their opinions.

Once the feedback is collected, HR Leaders can maintain unity among the leadership team, counseling those at the top and making them aware of negative behaviors and how all of this impacts the company as a whole. They also encourage and motivate other leaders to drive the necessary changes; it is also HR’s responsibility to remove those who are poor leaders and recruit in people who align with the company’s current or desired culture.

As positive and effective cultural environment continues to be strong factor in a company’s ability to attract new candidates and retain its current employees, HR departments are under always under huge pressure to manage and nurture their company’s work culture. HR Leaders not always have the power to change, replace, and improve the culture, but they have the ability to influence leadership to guide the work culture in the right direction and nurture an environment where employees enjoy coming to work and performing their jobs effectively as well as efficiently.

Few ways through which a positive and effective cultural management can be seen in a workplace with the help of HR Leaders:

  • In any organization, the very first role of HR department is to be an active culture consultant to the executive team members. HR Leaders need to evaluate and observe the current cultural situation, develop a strategic culture plan that compliments with the organization's values and goals and later work with other executive leaders to improve and implement the plan.
  • After receiving the feedback from employees and analyzing their opinions, HR Leaders must develop certain company culture initiatives. Each company culture is different, same goes for its employees, so employees must be included when deciding how to build a company culture where they can contribute to its success and continue to work efficiently.
  • Different generations have different desires and expectations regarding an organization's culture. HR leaders need to assess how each generation's expectations and needs shape a changing organizational culture. HR Leaders should determine whether their current workplace culture is strong, or whether new programs should be incorporated — such as increased mentorship/counseling.
  • HR Leaders should play a lead role in identifying the best practice areas of focus to improve and influence positive and effective cultural management in workplace.
  • It is usually said that “People make the culture in a company.” Therefore, it is a duty of HR Leaders to help executives and managers by bringing in the most suited candidates, maintain open communication and actionable feedback, and put the proper documentation and protections in place.
  • It is impossible to build a positive and effective company culture without HR Leaders help. HR Leaders integrate morale values and ethics into management and employee training, which reinforce and maintain the desired culture.
  • HR Leaders must support an environment that supports and nurtures two-way and up-and-down communication.
