With the festive season around the corner, e-commerce retailers are making sure that customers get seamless shopping experience. In a bid to smoothen the process, Amazon India has created more than 22,000 seasonal employment positions at its fulfilment centres, sortation centres, delivery stations and customer service sites.

In a statement Akhil Saxena, Vice President India Customer Fulfilment, Amazon India said, "In our effort to provide a seamless shopping experience, we are excited to announce that we are enhancing our teams significantly with two times the number of associates working in the Amazon fulfilment network and customer service sites.”

The over 22,000 seasonal associates will help in augmenting our capabilities to serve our customers better and enable us to deliver consistently high levels of customer experience," he added.

Associates who have been provided opportunities, specifically for the festive season, will join the thousands of associates at Amazon's 41 fulfilment centres, 15 sortation centres and close to 150 delivery stations across the country to help pick, pack, ship and deliver customer orders more efficiently. These positions have been created in Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and many other cities across the country, the statement said.

Who are seasonal workers

According to ILO, “workers in seasonal employment are workers who hold implicit or explicit contracts of employment where the timing and duration of the contract is significantly influenced by seasonal factors such as the climatic cycle, public holidays and/or agricultural harvests. These workers may be classified as employees or own-account workers according to the specific characteristics of the employment contract.”

Termination of seasonal employment

The seasonal employees get into the organization fully knowing the number of work days. In India mostly, these employees are freshers, students who take this opportunity as an experience to further their career. And since this is contractual, no one raises a hue and cry about the termination post the holiday season.

Last year, Flipkart had hired about 10,000 temporary staff to combat the festive season rush.

In the US, last year Amazon.com Inc had said it would hire more than 120,000 seasonal workers in for the holiday season, 20% more than 2015 – a steady increase of hiring seasonal employees.

Getting ready for festive rush

Along with recruiting seasonal workers, Amazon has also announced seven new fulfilment centres (FCs) or warehouses in Ahmedabad, Delhi, Kolkata, Nagpur, Gurgaon, Pune, and Mumbai. Amazon now has 20 FCs across 10 Indian states, covering an area of over 1.6 million square feet with a storage capacity of nearly four million cubic feet.

In two weeks, shopping season will officially start for the most part of the country. While it has already going on in the Eastern part with Durga Puja round the corner, the festival of lights – Diwali will see major splurge. And e-commerce giants are getting ready to make the most of it.
