How Facebook focuses on the ‘builder mindset’ while hiring

The 21st century saw many changes, ups, and downs along with disruptions caused by technology and the need for a talent pool that is ready for a future full of uncalled surprises. Organisations have let go of the organizational structure but have also adopted new practices and are looking for skills and passion rather than just qualification. The interview process has been simplified, and organizations now follow a strategic interview method. However, can we make any business future proof and hire employees who are loyal and judge if we are hiring the right candidate based entirely on interview and resume? That can be a tough question to answer with various opinions.

Archana Vadala, Staffing Leader- India/ANZ/SEA, Facebook in a session at the People Matters Talent Acquisition League, helps us understand the importance of building employees for continuance and skill-based jobs over qualification.

She states "Interview process has been simplified with technology that helps you access body language and facial recognition. However, it is impossible to understand if the candidate is a perfect fit as per job description and will be able to give 100% productivity."

Discarding the importance of education and qualification can be termed as negligence. However, a course or degree in a particular field or specialized courses cannot be benchmarks of judging any individual's skills. An ideal employee described splendidly by Archana is, "Change is constant, and an employee who can adapt, incorporate problem-solving and be prepared and predict problems that may arise in the future is an ideal employee."

Technology has opened up many new aspects for HR, and we now need to understand behavior and strengths of the interviewee and check if the candidate would be able to fulfill responsibilities as per the job description.

Motivating and appointing or allocating jobs as per employee’s skill and interest will enhance the output and make work easy and fun. Archana addressed the topic of hiring builders and states "It can be difficult to understand how good a candidate would be in the job role. Hence, we try and gauge their interests and skills and hire people based on their subject of interest. At Facebook, we believe in letting people learn and develop their skills and talent rather than engaging them inbound job roles and description. This method has helped us in building greater relationships with employees and a sense of belonging."

Experimenting with new techniques to acquire talent and retaining can be challenging, but the beauty lies in the ability to put things together.

Archana states "What and how are the two aspects that Facebook looks at. There is a lot of investment to acquire talent, but they are your best returns if you invest in right employees."

Trial and error is a part of all process, and it plays a significant role in future proofing any organization as one needs to peel off all the layers and understand intricate details of hiring and interviewing process. Rebuild the process and see which methods or techniques help you understand and achieve the right candidate with skill sets required by your organization.
