Ahead of the festive season Amazon creates over 50k seasonal jobs

“The 50,000 seasonal associates will help us in augmenting our capabilities," says Akhil Saxena Amazon India Vice President (India Customer Fulfilment).
Ahead of the festive season Amazon creates over 50k seasonal jobs

On the onset of the festive season, Amazon India expands its teams and makes way for over 50,000 seasonal employees. The seasonal jobs have been created for all its network of fulfillment centers, sortation centers, delivery stations and customer service sites in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Pune and others.

These temporary employees will join the current workforce to help pick, pack, ship and deliver customers' orders more efficiently.

Some of these hires will also work with the 20 customer service sites (across 16 cities) that provide voice support for customers in vernacular languages like Kannada, Tamil and Telugu and support Amazon customers in India with pre and post order service through email, chat, social media and phone.

"In our effort to provide a seamless shopping experience, we have enhanced our teams significantly with more than 2X the number of seasonal associates working in the Amazon fulfillment network and customer service sites compared to the last festive season. The 50,000 seasonal associates will help us in augmenting our capabilities," shares Amazon India Vice President (India Customer Fulfilment) Akhil Saxena.

Amazon India expects that this enhancement of jobs will play an instrumental role in driving an exceptional experience during Amazon India's Great Indian Festival Sale that is slated to be held between October 10th and 15th.

Amazon is not alone in the league of seasonal hiring during the festive season. Flipkart also significantly expanded its infrastructure and delivery operations ahead of its Big Billion Days (BBD) sale that will be held from October 10th to 14th.

As per a report by research firm RedSeer, about 20 Mn people are expected to shop on various e-commerce platforms during the festive sale next month and this engagement can translate into sales of around $3 Bn for players like Amazon and Flipkart.

As Flipkart and Amazon compete with each other in maximizing the customer reach in the coming festive season, the seasonal employees are the ones who come in handy in managing the extra workload.

However, there are some questions which are left unanswered. How do they manage these seasonal employees? What happens to the temporary workforce once the season gets over? Do some of them get absorbed in permanent roles?

Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below. Share some ways in which you have dealt with temporary or seasonal employees before.
