With the inclusion of technology in the HR function, the learning landscape has evolved. Technology has played a major part in this transition by being the enabler. IT trainings have grown obsolete and the trend has moved to teaching people where they are. With these changes, the need to be learning agile has become critical for the growth of an HR professional.

The importance of learning agility for HR professionals is stronger today than it has ever been. While in the past one could learn incrementally, today there is a danger that if you are not actively seeking out learning, you might become obsolete. There has been a huge shift in the need for HR people to constantly learn and therefore be learning agile.

When looking at the learning curve for an HR professional, there is a debate on the level of expertise one needs to ensure optimal efficiency. This was pondered upon and debated by some of the most active HR professionals in the Industry at a bistro session during TechHR 2014. A number of speakers agreed that it was about how one connects the dots and interprets the trends. . It is not a practical notion to expect an HR professional to stay on top of technology at all times. To ensure an efficient work environment, one does not need to understand technology or be technology savvy. It is about being able to see where the world is going and being Insight and trend savvy.

HR professionals deal with people from every sector, they however only have an understanding of their own. This can be a limiting factor in their ability to be insight savvy. To bridge this gap, it can be a useful practice to be get exposure to other sectors through training courses and MOOC sessions to enhance ones’ experiential learning. At the end of the day it is about being dynamic and always moving; and leaning and experiencing other sectors is an essential stepping stone to becoming learning agile and opening up the mind to a whole new experience.
