The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday raised match fees for domestic cricketers and also announced compensation for the 2020-21 season curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the revised pay structure announced by the BCCI, the world’s richest cricket governing body, a top Ranji Trophy player who has played more than 40 matches will now earn Rs 60,000 a day, up from Rs 35,000 earlier. This means that a senior player who earlier took home Rs 140,000 per Ranji match will now make Rs 240,000.

Similarly, those who make it to the playing eleven and who have 21-40 matches under their belt will earn Rs 50,000 a day, while those having played up to 20 games will be entitled to Rs 40,000. The salary of reserve players has also gone up from Rs 17,500 to up to Rs 30,000 a day.

The board has also decided to pay a 50% additional match fee as compensation for the 2020-21’s pandemic-curtailed season, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said on Twitter.

“Cricketers who participated in 2019-20 Domestic Season will get 50 per cent additional match fee as compensation for season 2020-21 lost due to COVID-19 situation,” he wrote on the micro-blogging site.

The government had last year announced a nationwide lockdown and banned gatherings to curb the spread of the deadly coronavirus. As a result, the domestic cricket calendar had to be curtailed, spelling financial trouble for many players who struggled to pay their bills.

The increase in salary for players across all age groups in men’s and women’s cricket is a welcome move, as it will allow them to concentrate on their game and make an impact. India’s domestic cricket infrastructure, and the BCCI’s rewards and compensation structure have helped produce world-beating players, making Team India one of the most feared units in international cricket.
