French technology company Capgemini would look at retraining the majority of its over one lakh staff in the country to improve productivity in order to deliver traditional services as well as grab opportunities to service digital contracts.

CEO Paul Hermelin told ET, “We will go on a massive reskilling effort and that will be a huge part of our operations now. The speed of change makes it important to first increase academic level of our people (employees).”

This also means that it would limit its external hiring in India.

Hermelin added, “With 100,000 people, we have the kind of stature we need in India. We are not in India looking for more stature. We added some Indian platform through some acquisitions which are far more targeted.”

Capgemini has scaled its operations in India on the back of its acquisitions such as Kanbay and IGATE helping it to grow its workforce to over one lakh people. In February, it spent €400 Mn to acquire Liquidhub, a US digital customer engagement firm with an offshore base in India.

Hermelin added that while the company has acquired companies with large employee base in India in the past, future acquisitions will be focused purely on new skills. “There will be new acquisitions, where we will target new skills in India and not volumes,” he said.

Hermelin added clients are consolidating their vendors in traditional outsourcing deals and driving business volumes at lower costs while spending more of their technology budgets in newer digital contracts. With digital deals growing at scale, Capgemini was also looking to offshore work to India.
