Siddhartha Lal led two-wheeler major, Roya Enfield announced the end of the strike as the workers in Chennai resumed the work. It is reported that the company lost 26 percent in the past two months owing to the strike and gained nearly 6 percent yesterday after the strike was called off.

The strike began at the Oragadam plant on 24th September 2018. The Oragadam plant employed temporary workers and a small section of workers who were not members of the unrecognized Royal Enfield Employees Union. About 600 workers abstained from work for the past 50 days. The union demanded the management to reinstate around 120 probationary employees and one permanent employee to their jobs and to offer the bonus which was pending since 2015.

Siddhartha Lal, Managing Director and CEO, Eicher Motors shared in media and blamed third party stating, “We support the formation of a union. In fact, we have an elected committee within our plant.” He further said that the main principle issue at Oragadam (plant) is that we do not recognize the external political leadership which is at odds with the company’s and employees’ objectives.

“These are third parties who do not necessarily have the best interest of employees or company in mind often has their axe to grind as well, “said Lal.

Earlier the workers at Royal Enfield also protested against the company’s demand to deposit their mobile phones at the security room and submit an undertaking that they would not participate in similar agitations in the future.
