Hiring by IT firms to be flat in FY19: NASSCOM

Incremental hiring by IT companies will be flat this year. As per a media report, the industry is expected to add one lakh new jobs in 2018-19, which was the same number that it recruited the previous year.

Meanwhile, a majority of the new jobs will be in technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and big data analytics. Debjani Ghosh, President, NASSCOM, stated on the sidelines of a two-day NASSCOM HR Summit that the  total demand for AI and big data analytics in 2018 will be 5.11 lakh, which will increase to 7.86 lakh by 2021.

The $165 billion Indian IT industry at the end of this year, the industry will employ nearly 40 lakh people.

At the summit, NASSCOM also showcased a roadmap for its pilot re-skilling initiative platform called FutureSkills, to position India as a talent hub for emerging technologies such as AI and big data analytics.

Under the 9-66-155 plan, NASSCOM has identified nine emerging technologies; 66 job roles in these technologies and 155 skills that will be needed in these technologies. The FutureSkills platform is a complement to the government’s Digital India initiative. These nine technologies are big data analytics, Artificial Intelligence, cyber security, robotic process automation, Internet of Things, social and media, virtual reality, 3D printing and cloud computing.

Speaking on the issue of job loss, Debjani Ghosh added that every industrial revolution has caused job displacements and new jobs get created. The same is happening this time.

Debjani added, “The reason we suddenly taking note of this is, that is happening at a pace that we are not used to. Every single research shows that while routine jobs that do not require thinking and softer skills, will be automated. However, there will be more jobs created.”

Ghosh added that the focus should not be on the displacement of jobs but on re-skilling workers so that they are ready for the new jobs that are going to be created.
