Japanese technology major NEC Corporation is planning to more than double its revenue to $1 Bn within five years in India on the back of offshore support centers, smart city project, and 5G, and plans to hire 14,000 employees to support growth in India and the US, European and Asian countries.

Takashi Niino, President and CEO, NEC Corporation, told ET that India is one of the focus areas and a key strategic market. To that end, in order to speed up growth, the firm is increasing its manpower to enable the growth journey.

Currently, the company has 6,000 employees in India. It is looking to utilize India as the hub for its offshore support and product development for global markets and the manpower expansion will also include research and development (R&D) expansion.

The manpower expansion will help drive its offshore software development capabilities, airport solutions, one ID based on Biometric and Artificial Intelligence (AI) not only for the Indian market but to support western and Asian countries. The firm is aiming to develop products and solutions around the safe city, logistics, healthcare, and digital ID in India not just for the Indian market, but for the Middle East and Africa.

Also on the anvil are plans to form alliances with IT companies and telcos for India’s smart city project, especially the safer city segment. Last year, it had established a research lab in Bengaluru and is now planning to double the headcount by the end of this year by actively hiring data scientists. In this respect, NEC joins the league of many global firms which have expanded or have plans to increase their manpower in the country, by leveraging its IT talent. This month, the Korean technology giant Samsung also announced plans to bolster its research and development (R&D) team in India by hiring 1,200 engineers from campuses next year.
