Korean technology giant Samsung is planning to bolster its research and development (R&D) team in India by hiring 1,200 engineers from campuses next year.

Sameer Wadhawan, Head of Human Resources, Samsung India, stated, “The campus hiring will be done across the IITs (Indian Institute of Technology), NITs (National Institute of Technology), and other premier institutes like BITS Pilani and Manipal Institute of Technology. This hiring will be for our three R&D centres in Bengaluru, Noida, and New Delhi.”

The hiring process has commenced on December 1.

The engineers will be hired across branches such as computer science, electronics & communications, electrical, mathematics & computing, instrumentation, and information technology and will be hired to work in future-oriented technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, image processing, cloud, internet of things, data analytics, and VLSI (very large scale integration)

If Samsung achieves this target, it will be surpassing its earlier goal of hiring 2,500 people by 2020 given that it has hired 2,000 people in the last two years. The tech giant has a marked presence in India with the country accounting for about 70,000 employees out of its total headcount of 320,000.

Interestingly, the hiring comes at a time when many other technology companies are laying off employees to cut costs. However, given the fact that India is a high growth market for the world’s largest smartphone maker by volumes, the announcement is not a surprise. While demand in developed markets of North America and Europe remained stagnant, sales in emerging market countries including India, helped the company offset the subdued demand in Q3.
