Air India plans to trim unions, hold polls soon

National carrier Air India will shortly conduct elections among its 15 unions to curtail their number, a move that may end a large chunk of its labour problems. The management aims to elect five out of the 15 unions — two for the airline and three others for its two recently hived-off entitites of engineering and ground-handling, a senior executive told ET recently. Air India has in the past, faced numerous problems owing to the presence of multiple unions in different functions. Most of them have arisen out of conflicts between groups from the two erstwhile entities — Air India which flew mostly international and Indian Airlines for domestic operations. The two were merged in 2007.
