Google to expand its Internet Saathi program in India

Google to expand its Internet Saathi program in India

Internet Saathi was launched in 2015 by Google with the aim of helping women in rural India to help them become digitally literate. According to the latest media report, Google said that it would expand the program in India. The purpose of the move is to help create ‘digitally opportunities for livelihood’. 

According to the report, 30,000 women have been trained by the program and which has further impacted 12 million women in the country.

According to Sapna Chadha, the Google Marketing Head - South East India and Asia, "Internet usage by women in rural areas is a challenge. Earlier, only 1 in 10 Internet users in rural India was a woman. Two years later, this has grown to 3 in 10."

As per the media report, Tata Trust has also set up Foundation For Rural Entrepreneurship Development (FREND) with the aim of helping people in the rural areas to utilize the services of Internet Saathi. According to Raman Kalyanakrishnan, the Head of Strategy at Tata Trusts, over 12,000 Internet Saathis have signed up to take part in the next phase of the Internet Saathi project.

The program, Internet Saathi, is currently prevalent in 1.1 lakh villages and now the aim is to reach 3 lakh villages in the country in the coming years.
