IT major Infosys will invest Rs 100 crore in the first phase of its development centre in a 50-acre facility in Kolkata. The centre will generate employment for over 1,000 engineers,

This development comes nearly a decade after it first signed a pact with the West Bengal government to set up a unit in the state.

It was in 2008 when Infosys, during the tenure of former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had committed to invest Rs 500 Cr in a facility that would create employment for 5,000 people. However the IT major had surrendered the land after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee raised objections in 2011 to tax incentives offered by the previous Left government

Ramadas Kamath, head of Infrastructure at Infosys stated, “We gave up the earlier land. In lieu of that, we got the new land.”

The first phase of construction on the 525,000-square feet facility is expected to be completed within 15 months from the date of obtaining regulatory clearances, the company said.

Last month, the Indian software technology giant also announced plans to invest around Rs 750 Cr in its upcoming facility in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The company is planning to strengthen its footprint in the Noida campus which also aligns with the commencement of its new software development center.
