A move that is consistent with the current trend of appointing women to top posts, another one has been announced today, this time in the education sector. The Ministry of Education (MoE) announced that Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit has been named as the Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University few days after ex-VC foray as the new chairperson of UGC.

The appointment marks the first time a female academician will be at helm of the central varsity, the move latest in the series of appointments made by the Ministry of Education to the top posts of central educational institutions.  

"President Ram Nath Kovind, who is Visitor to the University, has approved the appointment of Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit as JNU Vice Chancellor. Her appointment is for a period of five years," the MoE statement said.

Santishree will be the first woman VC of the 53 year old institution, of which she herself is an alumni as a former MPhil and PhD student in International Relations. Currently, the 59 year old teaches at the Politics and Public Administration Department of Savitribai Phule University as a tenured professor.

She is also a part of multiple statutory bodies instituted by the government, and has a reputation of being multilingual, with command over Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Sanskrit along with English and Hindi.

The outgoing VC M Jagadesh Kumar congratulated Santishree by wishing "her success in the new role” and thanked the JNU community for their continued support in his farewell letter. He also appreciated the students and administrative staff, parting with words “my wife and I will always cherish the association with JNU for the rest of our lives." 

M Jagadesh Kumar was appointed as the head of JNU in 2016.
