The Karnataka state government is working on a jobs portal to help private sector firms recruit candidates skilled under the government programmes.

As per an ET report, the government has tied up with the UN Development Programme for this initiative.

The move comes as the government wants to transform the conventional employment exchanges in districts, and align the recruitment process with current market trends. As per the report, there is an estimated 3.5 lakh jobs vacant in the private sector.

Skills Development Minister RV Deshpande reviewed the skill development department’s programmes and shared his plans with the media. Deshpande stated that the department will enroll online the candidates trained under government funding, put up their profiles and connect them with potential employers through the portal.

Deshpande said, “The challenge of unemployment will grow bigger in the days to come with newer technologies and automation making many jobs obsolete. Fresh graduates and youth will need to learn new skills that the market requires in order to become employable.”

In this direction, the government has identified more than 1,000 trainers and training institutions across the state. These will be selected on a transparent basis to provide skill training to 2.5 lakh youths in the age group of 16 to 35 years. While the government will pay them for their services, but they will have to ensure placement for 70% of candidates trained by them. Only when they meet the target, will they get their final payment.

Also, the government will set up skill academies in districts in partnerships with the private sector on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis to provide necessary skills to rural youth at competitive costs to government.

In this direction, the government will take industrial training institutes (ITIs) to their next level in terms of technology and the programmes that they offer in order to make them competitive in the current progressive market.
