Motorola to lay off 4,000 employees globally

Ailing cell phone maker Motorola Mobility will shrink its operations in India and lay off 4,000 employees worldwide as part of its restructuring efforts. The restructuring efforts at the company are aimed at reviving its sagging fortunes. The cuts are the first step in Google’s plan to reinvent Motorola, which has fallen far behind its biggest competitors, Apple and Samsung, and to shore up its Android mobile business and expand beyond search and software into the manufacture of hardware. It is expected that one-third of 4,000 job loss would be in the US and the company plans to leave unprofitable markets, stop making low-end devices and focus on a few cell phones instead of dozens.
