Wage stalemate ends at Hero MotoCorp

Hero MotoCorp Ltd (HMCL) signed a three-year wage settlement agreement with its workers at Gurgaon plant after months of negotiations on April 29, 2013. According to media reports, both parties have agreed upon a hike of Rs 9,000 a month, which will be divided over a period of three years with retrospective effect from August 1, 2012. Besides the wage hike, the Hero MotoCorp management also reportedly agreed to offer benefits and bonuses to the workers, a Times of India report said.
The talks began almost nine months ago but were stalled repeatedly as the workers and the management were at loggerheads over the amount of hike being offered to the former.
The Hero MotoCorp Workers Union were demanding a hike in monthly wages of up to Rs 18,000 per month, over a three-year period, which was almost three times higher than what the company was willing to pay. The company initially offered a hike of Rs 7,200. In February, the union had threatened to go on a strike and had held protests outside the factory gate at Gurgaon.
In an official statement issued by the Hero MotoCorp management, the new wage settlement was said to be in the “best interest of all workers”. “Hero MotoCorp has successfully concluded the wage settlement process with the workers of its Gurgaon plant. As the industry leader, we have taken a prudent and well-deliberated decision which is in the best interest of all our workers,” according to the statement.
