Labour and employment minister meets trade unions

Labour and employment minister Narendra Singh Tomar met the trade union leaders on Tuesday, morning, the first such meeting with employee representatives since the NDA government came to power. The meeting, officials said, would be used by the minister to discuss the challenges and the way forward in the world of work, and assumes significance as the government has decided to press ahead with long-overdue amendments to outdated labour laws like the Factories Act of 1948. Changes are also afoot in Minimum Wages Act of 1948 and the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act of 1986, on which trade unions are expected to have a strong view. Most of these legislative changes had been mooted by the UPA government, but weren’t taken to their logical conclusion.
