Skilling initiatives across sectors in 2016

India has one of the youngest populations in the world, a trend that is expected to continue until 2040. With an ever growing economy, it requires a large pool of skilled workers which entails numerous skill development initiatives for training them. Also with structural shift towards higher-productivity sectors, up-skilling of labour force is essential in order to ensure the country’s inclusive economic growth. Thus the need for a well-defined skill development framework, with clear demarcation of responsibilities for achieving specific targets, has been recognized by the Government of India. 

Below given are some of the path-breaking initiatives being taken across various sectors:

Government Initiatives

  • The Ministry Of Skill Development And Entrepreneurship has announced the launch of an online platform- www.indiaskillonline.com

  • MOU has been signed between MSDCS and ISRO on a nation-wide space distance learning program

  • The govt. is launching 50 India international skill centers across the country to help in foreign placement

  • Rise India in partnership with the Rajasthan government is planning to launch skill-building centers across the state to connect with young people and focus on building their skills in the agriculture and automotive industries

Corporate Initiatives

  • Ola has signed a deal with haryana government to skill 10000 men and Women

  • Tata Trusts and GE Healthcare have joined hands to bridge the “Skill Gap” in healthcare sector

  • Vedanta aligns with Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana for skill development

  • SBI and Oracle India in collaboration launched “D-Change” program to support “Skill India” and “Digital India”

Academic Initiatives

  • Coca-Cola University has announced the skilling of 350000 people by Dec 2017

  • Maharashtra board has decided not to fail students in SSC, instead, they will provide skill training to them

  • Symbiosis University of Applied Sciences becomes the first skill development University
