People are a key attribute of business agenda, outcome: Pankaj Gupta

In conversation with Pankaj Gupta, President, Hilti, India

Our success in the future will largely depend on our ability to manage volumes and talent competition

The top three HR priorities in 2011-2012 are talent acquisition, people retention and people development (specifically development of the second line). These priorities have been consistent since many years as HILTI has always been an extremely people focused organization and our leadership model also highlights the need to develop people and achieve outstanding results as two key dimensions.

In the coming years, people will continue to be the key driver and the primary reason behind our exponential growth. Only reason to limit ourselves will be our ability to handle the people topics. Our success in the future will largely depend on our ability to manage volume, time and talent competition.

I spend most of my key time on strategic manpower development and coaching of our managers. This has always been our focus area. Though, I have not been able to reach the desired state of focus on one of our key areas of developing second line leaders.

People being a key attribute of the business agenda and outcome, the main people-related goals on my scorecard include management development from within, retention of key talent and creating a great place to work.
The role of HR at Hilti is also reflected in the HR team’s purpose statement which reads ‘We passionately create Hilti fans by selecting and developing right people, using best HR practices.’ HR is a key part of the management team and actively participates in all key people and business decisions.
