Moreover, within the HR department, we have separate HR cells for our members at Corporate Headquarters, Manufacturing facility and Sales field so as to ensure focus on HR activities.”

The intranet portal ‘myClaris’, which is the interactive and online platform connecting systems and applications helps to share company updates and key milestone achievements, policies and other regular communication. The platform not only helps in improving productivity in terms of time saving through fast and easy information sharing, but also keeps the spirit of members alive throughout the day. myClaris reaches to the company’s international members as well through other intranet portals and through application in BlackBerry device. Claris Lifesciences is one of the very few companies to have transfused its HR processes onto BlackBerrry including the process of leave approval.
Among the special trainings for sales members, ‘Jaanbaaz’ has received recognition from industry experts and the same has been featured as a Case Study in Compendium of Corporate Case Studies on “Successful Practices in Training & Development” by CII. The program is aimed at the wholesome development of sales people whereby they can learn and internalize soft skills and mental attitude, feel young within and fight the odds with a brave heart. The training covers dimensions like leadership skills, communication skills, interpersonal skills and overall personality development including physical fitness and mental attitude. Through the organization’s suggestion program ‘Spark’, members can contribute their ideas for productivity improvement and earn rewards and recognition for the same. Claris also organizes Creativity Bash (C-Bash), which is a platform where members unveil their latent talents in dancing, singing, drama, mimicry, etc. C-Bashes are organized on themes like patriotism, burning national and international issues, festivals and social and cultural messages.
All the new joinees at Claris have to undergo a mandatory Induction, and extensive Work Authorization training conducted by various internal faculties. This training program furnishes the new joinees with the basic knowledge so that they work safely and give consistent output. The Supervisory Development Program (SDP), is aimed at enhancing and upgrading behavioral and soft skills at the supervisory level at the manufacturing facility. Key sessions of SDP are ‘Exploring & Managing Self’, ‘Problem Solving & Decision Making’, etc, and is conducted by external faculties. Managerial Development Program (MDP) organized at a broader level is focused on the development of managerial skills like planning, organizing, team management, communication skills and self management. Concludes Sharma, “We believe that our people philosophy, policies and practices are unique yet effective in nature to help us build a strong organization.”

The company’s flexibility and personal approach have won it its employees’ admiration and loyalty. At Quintiles, employees are encouraged to look beyond customary practices and share suggestions on processes or post new ideas using online tools like Eureka and IPAC. Business Innovative Center at the company reviews these suggestions and formulates an action plan. Collaboration is made possible also through an online document management tool that acts as a document library, issue tracker and surveys or quizzes.
Employee development avenues include Manage-Lead-Succeed for new managers that help them understand Quintiles ways of working and managing people; structured programs for staff from entry to a manager’s level that carry out detailed Training Need Analyses by line managers to identify a minimum of three training needs a year; on the job training; and external programs such as MBA, Project Management, Six Sigma certification, etc. Training is supplemented by an online learning portal called the Learning Curve that hosts around 4,000 courses spanning technical and soft-skill domains. In addition, Manager Direct Access allows managers to access and update HR data on their reportees.
Work-life balance is an area of focus for Quintiles across the world. Setting focus into action, they have adopted the Flexible Management Practices across the company that include work from home for certain levels; home based employment where the company provides the required work-enabling basic office infrastructure; choice of shift timings for those working in shifts, etc.
Celebrations at Quintiles allow people to bond and enjoy their togetherness. All major Indian festivals like Christmas and Diwali are marked by an event. Each business unit has set up a committee based on a theme of recreation or another action such as sports, picnic, social responsibility events, etc. and these committees help draw up the year’s calendar of fun activities. An annual Open Day sees families of employees meeting up in the office. Friday quizzes, ethnic days, food mela and other activities are organized to help people meet. An employee sums up the experience of working with Quintiles in these words: “First of all, I would like to say that this is the best place that I have worked for. People are so good and friendly that you feel like a family. You don’t have to hesitate even for a second to reach somebody, even a senior manager in the company.
