STRESS AND DEPRESSION

Stress and Depression at the workplace are caused by worrying about the work that you do, deadlines, pressure from the management and peers and the anxiety in performing well.  Other reasons could be illness, a poor diet, a sleep disorder or reasons outside of the workplace that affects your work.

Follow the simple instructions and advice given below to lead a life free of stress and depression:

Stop worrying.  Take one day at a time

Stop being anxious about your work.  Live life one day at a time.  Forget the past and do not think of the future.  Enjoy the day and face the challenges that come with it bravely.  Leave tomorrow’s challenges for the next day.

Think positive

Throw negative feelings out of the window.  Make room for positive thoughts only.  Celebrate every small accomplishment even if nobody else does.  Divide your tasks into a series of smaller steps that are easy to manage.  As you complete each task, you feel a sense of achievement and this helps to reduce the stress related to the project.

Attitude

Aim for excellence and not perfection.  Nothing will ever be perfect.  There will always be room for improvement.  Stop making things hard for you by running after perfection.

Visualization

You may be nervous about doing a certain task that might appear scary.  Visualize yourself doing the task in your mind.  This way, when the time comes, you are better prepared to deal with it in real-time.  For example, if you are going to be playing a game of cricket in front of a large group of people in the next couple of days, imagine playing the game in your mind.  This will help you deal with the fears, anxieties, and stress around this situation.

Develop a good sense of humor

Learn to laugh every once in a while, even if it is in the middle of a tough assignment.  It might ease things up, giving you an opportunity to look at things differently.

Maintain a good life

Develop other interests outside of the workplace.  Spend quality time with family and friends.

Listen to music

Listen to music to reduce stress levels, it helps you to elevate your mood and makes you feel comfortable.

Get enough sleep

Get at least 8 – 10 hours of sleep every day, no matter what your work schedules are.  Practice going to bed and waking up the next day at the same time.  Avoid caffeine and alcohol, reading, eating or watching television before bedtime.

Exercise

Exercise not only helps you to keep fit, but it also elevates your mood.  Energy levels automatically go up.

Eat healthy

Helping your weary mind and body to cope with stress and fatigue requires you to eat healthy meals and on time.  Do not skip any meals irrespective of work pressures and deadlines.

If the stress and depression levels go beyond manageable levels, it might be a good idea to seek professional help.  They could help you get started on the right path to feeling better and also help you in gaining insights on your current situation.
