‘My biggest priority is to build a culture of transparency’

In his own words, this is what the ‘Are You In The List’ 2015 winner has to say about himself.

Varun Tandon, Associate Consultant, Salto Dee Fe Consulting

Three and a half years in the HR profession, I am currently working in a HR consulting start-up in Gurgaon and supporting clients across IT, Real Estate, healthcare and BSFI sector. I am passionate about using knowledge from diverse fields to design solutions and most recently have been working on developing a mobile application for organizations to capture real-time feedback and recognition.

Core Differentiator: Exposure to various facets of business and HR

I have got exposure to operational and strategic HR across different sectors in consulting and the corporate world. Resultantly, this has shaped my business perspective. Some of these areas include handling Mergers and Acquisition, building organization’s vision, organization transformation intervention, building sales organization and designing a technology-driven product.

Biggest Priority: Building a culture of transparency

My belief is that people perform at peak of their capabilities when they are intrinsically motivated and being transparent goes a long way in ensuring the same.

The one thing I will:

Change in HR: Imitation of solutions

I believe HR should focus on understanding the demands of organization, leadership and design solutions based on proven facts rather than following trends and hear-say. For example, there is a lot of buzz in the HR fraternity around removing ratings for performance management, but some research suggest that people don’t mind ratings and it’s the objectivity and fairness that people are more concerned about.

Retain in HR: Management of HiPos

HiPos play a key role in the future of an organization and it is very important to provide them with right opportunities and help in their continuous development and retention.

My ideas to disrupt HR:

I aspire to become a strategic business partner by building a robust business understanding; building transparency and accountability and designing solutions that are backed by data and science. The first step that I have taken in this direction is – working on building “Karma Notes”. It is a tech product that helps in facilitating real-time feedback and recognition. This will also help in making the assessment process more practical and help in continuous development. I plan to gain more knowledge around Analytics in coming years to ensure robust decision making.
