Walmart Global Tech's key to nurturing belongingness and supporting well-being

At Walmart Global Tech, fostering a culture of belonging and well-being goes hand in hand. By embracing a culture of constant listening and leveraging data-driven insights, the tech company ensures that its policies and benefits meet the unique needs of a diverse group of employees.

Offering comprehensive health benefits to families, end-to-end support for expectant mothers, and access to assistive devices and accessibility solutions for People with Disabilities reflects the company's inclusive approach.

Bhumika Srivastava, Head of People, Walmart Global Tech, says we are a people-led, tech-powered organisation focusing on building a workplace where everyone feels like they belong. "Supporting our associates' holistic well-being is central to this mission. We recognise that well-being is multifaceted and ensure that our benefits and programs are designed holistically to encompass physical, emotional, and financial aspects."

Measuring a culture of well-being requires qualitative and quantitative indicators such as associate engagement scores, feedback, business impact, industry rankings, and utilisation of well-being resources. Hence, Bhumika calls for having various dimensions of well-being under one umbrella. Like they have Wellness @ Walmart. She further adds that what has also evolved is ‘how’ we deliver our offerings. "For instance, we have been intentional about making well-being more accessible via on-campus healthcare services, bringing shared experiences for associates and family members, and ensuring resources and learning are self-paced or hybrid in nature."

Well-being for diverse employees

Bhumika explains that the well-being philosophy is rooted in their culture of belonging and core values, including ‘Respect for the Individual’. "Celebrating the unique identities of our associates is key to nurturing belongingness and supporting well-being."

According to her, the culture of constant listening helps them curate inclusive policies and benefits that are data-driven and customised to meet the unique needs of our diverse associates across various life stages.

To maximise the impact of well-being initiatives, it is essential to drive consistent communication and feedback, Bhumika believes. "A culture of active listening can help tailor programs as per the evolving needs of associates and ensure they remain relevant, accessible, and effective."

For her, leaders must serve as role models and demonstrate their commitment to health and wellness. "Embedding well-being as part of goal setting can go a long way to promote both self-care and collective wellness at the workplace."

Recognising team members and identifying well-being champions can be a great way to reinforce the message. Additionally, regular check-ins and pulse surveys are key to building a supportive feedback loop to understand and address associates' needs in real time.

Bhumika sees belonging' as the cornerstone of holistic well-being at Walmart. "Our initiatives are designed to be inclusive, supportive, and relevant for associates of all ages, backgrounds, and life stages. We continuously explore innovative ways to engage associates across career levels, helping them fully utilise available benefits and prioritise well-being for themselves and their families."
