Differentiator: Online learning programme for executives

Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) started its first batch comprising of 42 students in 1997. Over the past decade, IIMK has grown at a fast pace and now boasts of a current batch strength of 356 students offering the widest range of academic programs in management education.

The institute’s resolute focus on academic excellence along with a need to nurture socially responsible and thinking professionals has made it as one of the most sought after B-Schools in the country. It abides by the dictum 'Globalizing Indian Thought' which aims at developing innovative, socially responsible and environmentally friendly practitioners, leaders and educators.

The various programs offered by IIMK are Post Graduate Programme (PGP), Executive Post Graduate Programme (EPGP), Fellow Programme in Management (FPM), Executive Post Graduate Programme (Part-Time)-Kochi Campus, Management Development Programme (MDP) and Faculty Development Programme (FDP). Incidentally IIMK is the first institute in Asia to offer a distance online learning programme in management for working executives called Interactive Distance Learning. This was introduced in 2001-2002.

Faculty at IIMK includes guest, adjunct, visiting and regular faculty. Guest faculty are usually from the industry and are instrumental in imparting students with invaluable insights on a particular topic. The core strength of the faculty is formed by regular faculty and a set of committed adjunct faculty (who conduct one or more courses) or visiting faculty (who come for a period ranging from three months to two years). There is also regular flow of faculty from leading foreign institutions to bring in global experience and perspective. The institute aims to have a faculty mix of 70 per cent regular and 30 per cent adjunct/visiting in various programmes. Faculty members are also involved in industry interaction by attending seminars and conferences. This helps them to be in constant touch with ongoing industry needs and developments.

The Student Council at IIMK acts like an apex student body coordinating and managing student affairs, which include academic, extra-curricular and day-to-day activities. The campus is run entirely by students so that they can experience management outside the classroom. The Student Council organises various events throughout the year. There are also several committees, interest groups and clubs at the institute, which ensure all students are given an opportunity to develop themselves and complement the quality of life and learning at campus.

The institute also has a strong International Exchange Programme for students and faculty with several leading management institutes in EU and ASEAN countries like SDA, Bacconi, Jonkoping, Sweden, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark, ESCAP-EAP, France; University of Queensland, Austria, Victoria University of Wellington and so on. An active member of the Strategic Management Forum, IIMK lays stress on organizing seminar/conferences and conducts management programs for teachers. Leading management institutions like IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Indore and Lucknow along with MDI, Gurgaon, XLRI, Jamshedpur and IIFT, New Delhi have joined hands to conduct week long faculty development programme on various subjects in the field of strategic management.
