Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM) is one of the oldest management educational institutes in eastern India. It was constituted on 25 April 1953 by a resolution passed by the Senate of the University of Calcutta. This was a result of a joint initiative taken by the University of Calcutta, the Government of West Bengal, the Government of India and the industry veterans in India. The aim was to set up a premiere management education institute in India. The institute has successfully celebrated its Diamond Jubilee Year signifying 60 years of eventful journey in management education in India since that day. The open and sprawling campus offers a serene and tranquil environment favourable to learning for the students and faculty at IISWBM.

IISWBM offers several full and part time courses. The institute runs MBA programmes during the day and evening. Two programmes, MBA course and the Masters in Human Resource Management (MHRM), are affiliated to the University of Calcutta. The institute also runs Master of Public Systems Management with specialization in Environment Management, Energy Management, Transportation & Logistics Management and Health Care & Hospital Management. The MPSM course is affiliated to the University of Calcutta. The course on Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) is offered in the evening. The institute presently has about 1,200 students out of which over one-third are women. Admission is through the Common Admission Test (CAT) of the IIMs although the IIMs have no role either in the selection process or in the conduct of the MBA programme. Students are also required to complete the formalities of filling and downloading the institute’s form online.

IISWBM has distinguished faculty who are pioneers in their own field. Guest lectures from industry veterans are also a common feature. The faculty of the Institute are encouraged to adopt a number of research & consultancy project work particularly to develop industry-institute interaction. The key area of research & consultancy work focuses on functional areas of management viz., marketing, HR, finance, system/IT, etc. besides Public Systems Management viz., environment, energy, transportation & logistics, health care & hospital management.

IISWBM offers its students' state of the art, technologically advanced and modern facilities. The spacious classrooms are well equipped with Smart boards, LCD multimedia projector etc. and properly maintained to cater to the academic requirements of the students. Students are also provided with laptops. The Student Activity Center at IISWBM has been built to ensure participation of students in recreational activities. Students are encouraged to choose from a variety of clubs and activities. Some of the clubs are marketing club, photography club and finance club. IISWBM’s rich heritage along with traditional legacy and values makes it one of the finest Institute in the country imparting superior management education.
