The 15th NHRD Conference in Bangalore was a landmark event for the largest body of HR in India. People Matters shares the experience in a literature to twitterature form – the experience of meeting over 1,500 professionals, real-time knowledge sharing through twitter and an array of unique initiatives that sets the conference apart

Live and Breathe Change - the 3 day annual conference organized by NHRDN saw a turnout of over 1,500 HR and business professionals, bloggers, students and HR service providers who gathered at India’s largest HR knowledge sharing platform. The conference name is an epitome of what the audience witnessed through the 3 days – a progressive and most representative body of HR in India - showcasing the talent agenda and its relevance to business. The carefully chosen sessions, speakers and other initiatives that engulfed the conference area in Palace Grounds, Bangalore represented the extensive role of HR in enabling business productivity.

The conference started with an offer of 16 pre-conferences available to all delegates including varied options of learning segmented for different levels and functions.

Day 1 saw people swarming into the exciting and engaging stalls that 42 companies participating companies had put together as they participated in the ‘HR Showcase’ – a first of its kind platform to present the best HR practices in the most interactive manner possible. The energy level at each stall was contagious and much invited to kick-start the country’s biggest HR conference. The common aspect of this conference were the many unique activities it introduced and each session/workshop was designed to adequately add value to every participant in some way or the other. Running the Student Conference alongside gave the participating students the most unique experience of interacting with the who’s who of the HR fraternity, which aimed to inspire and build confidence in students to architect their own career. From carving their own career path, to finding the right means to make the required transition from student to corporate life, to the clinic approach to participate in an intensive session to learn with experts in different functional areas of HR like, talent acquisition, compensation and benefits, etc was a unique experience for the students.

The ‘Make Your Own Conference’ (MYOC) was an open forum that allowed participants the opportunity to conduct discussions on diverse subjects under the HR spectrum. This distinctive platform was a sole chance for industry experts to be heard, lead discussion groups, and be heard as an SME. For the young leaders, there was ‘The Young Thought Leaders’ - a people practices contest designed to identify and reward thought leadership in young executives. Of the 13 young executives who where shortlisted to present their people practices at the conference, Rui Savio Das of MindTree was recognized as the winner for presentation on the topic ‘Bringing transparency in your compensation practice’.

The conference which engulfed over 1500 participants also included the ‘Voice of Youth’ carried out by a task force called Team Navratan which aimed to study the ‘Perception of Youth’ regarding their future workplace. This was conducted through a questionnaire administered through the NHRD website as a pre-conference activity.

Needless to mention is the august list of speakers who enthralled the participating HR professionals over the 3 days. Ed Lawler, Professor, Marshall School of Business, shared his views on the future of organizations and the need to redefined the HR function to cater to the new reality. Vinita Bali, CEO, Britannia and Conference Chairman strengthened the point that talent is not an HR responsibility but a business priority.

The first half of day 2 saw ‘Whose business is people?’ the CEO-CHRO talk show, as well as a session on ‘Social Media’. Most delighting was to hear Dr. Dave Ulrich say that much of what he presented is what Indian HR is already practicing. The audience of thousand plus listened to Dr. Ulrich’s ‘Outside-in-strategy for HR’, while being amused by his candid presentation style. Other sessions included a perfect blend of topics driving businesses today, including, ‘Building India’s human capital’ which addressed the challenge behind optimizing on India’s demographic dividend and tapping into diverse talent pool, which is fast becoming a necessity for organizations to meet its talent-deficit challenge. The limelight of day 3 was the first ever open forum LSIP (Large Scale interactive Process) facilitated by Anil Sachdev in an attempt to ‘Co-create our tomorrow’. The audience of thousand was divided into smaller groups to participate in a carefully crafted activity plan that aimed to picture the ‘India of tomorrow’.
