It’s Not a man-made world

This International Women’s Day, do something beyond putting up a status, or RTing a tweet, and make a change, no matter how big or small.
It’s Not a man-made world

Doctor. Firefighter. Engineer. Farmer. CEO.

What is the mental image that is evoked, when such professions are named? What would you find if you searched for images of these terms on Google?

Do you observe a scary similarity between all of them?

Almost all of them are assumed to be men! Don’t believe us? Google them. You’ll be surprised to discover how far along you have to scroll, to get an image of a single woman!

The world is unfairly biased towards women, in different aspects, and these assumptions are the reflections of such biases. This bias is reflected in the words we use ‘man-made’, mankind, fireman etc. Why do we need to re-iterate that the doctor is a ‘woman doctor’, or the nurse is a ‘male nurse’? This inequality is easily observable in every field, from hospitality, entertainment, science, and the corporate world.

In a wonderfully simple and short video by Microsoft, another such inherent bias is highlighted. The message is simple, and at the end of 1 minute and 40 seconds, a hard realisation hits you. Released on an opportune day, the video, if nothing demonstrates how the human mind works and why there is a need to change it. This International Women’s Day, do something beyond putting up a status, or RTing a tweet, and make a change, no matter how big or small. Do not accept notions and norms of your gender, unless you feel comfortable. Challenge, Create, Confront, Craft and don’t Compromise. After all, it is not a ‘man-made’ world!

People Matters wishes you a wonderful International Women’s Day – More Power to you!
