India Inc simulates crises to assess staff

In an offsite training session, about three personnel from Maruti Suzuki India are in deep discussion. One of them appears to be the boss, who is trying to salvage a situation being created by the other two, supposedly his subordinates. While one of the subordinates has fallen short of delivering a project, the other is facing a family problem.

In an offsite training session, about three personnel from Maruti Suzuki India are in deep discussion. One of them appears to be the boss, who is trying to salvage a situation being created by the other two, supposedly his subordinates. While one of the subordinates has fallen short of delivering a project, the other is facing a family problem.

Role-play is one of the assessment tools used at Maruti Suzuki India as part of the performance appraisal programme, a Times of India report said. In another instance, a team is considered to be a company wherein members are asked to play specific leadership roles. A business scenario is simulated for the participants.

Increasingly, companies are using such assessment tools, including psychometric tools, to decipher the growth potential in each individual employee. At Aditya Birla Group, different instruments are used - sometimes in combination - for recruitment and talent/leadership potential identification.
