According to a report carried out by workplace solutions expert, Regus, fourth-fifth companies in India are offering their employees flexible working.
A bulk of these companies are now realising that if they offer flexible working to their staff, not only does it provide benefits like reduced overhead costs but also enhances employee productivity.
The report mentioned that about 59% of Indian companies believe that that flexible working costs less than fixed office working. In addition to this 8 out of 10 businesses which offered flexible employment opportunities said that their employees had a considerably better work-life balance, improving satisfaction and motivation, while almost 4 in 10 considered that it improves staff productivity. 3 in 10 said that it aided them to cope with the rapid growth of the company.
Regus' Country Head, Madhusudan Thakur, commented, "That flexible working has become the norm is good news all round; from employer to employee, from families to wider society and even the environment, everyone can benefit."
The survey also revealed that trust remains a stumbling block for most firms which offer flexible working with 57% of Indian firms providing this privilege to their senior staff
"By basing the right to flexibility on seniority, some firms are missing huge opportunities and may even alienate new talent that they may have gone to a great effort to attract," Thakur added.
Thakur also mentioned that problems like the poor transport infrastructure of the country posed a major snag to the company’s growth as employees waste several hours of their time in traffic every day. "Flexible working could help address this issue, so it is disappointing to still see some companies letting lack of trust hold them back from flexible working for all employees," he added. However, since a good proportion of them see its advantages, "even if they are not doing it at the moment, we can expect further growth in flexible working across the decade," Thakur said.
