In a recent report, Wipro has shared its plan to hire about 12,000 students from Indian campuses in the coming fiscal.

As Wipro like other players in the sector continuously strives to survive disruption, having a strong talent pool is extremely crucial for the firm. The IT major has hence invested in multiple initiatives to attract young engineers and has focused on reskilling.

“We have been using these digitally native people for digital projects, re-skilling, providing higher salary and bonus, rotating jobs and awarding promotions,” shared Saurabh Govil, President and Chief Human Resources Officer, Wipro.

As businesses struggle to find job ready talent, the best way to curb talent shortage is hire for potential and train. Keeping this in mind, Wipro now has a clear focus to hire more freshers and train them in the latest technologies.

In September 2019, Wipro had secured a strategic seven-year deal valued at $300 Mn from ICICI Bank to provide a suite of digital services. As part of this strategic engagement, the IT major had also absorbed about 3,800 employees of Vara lnfotech (that used to service the bank) along with its existing contracts, facilities and assets, through a business transfer agreement valued at ₹321 crore.

In quarter three of the current fiscal, Wipro reported a net hiring of 6,000 people, and also witnessed an improvement in its attrition rate, from 17 percent a quarter ago to 15.7 percent for trailing 12 months.

The changing face of campus hiring

A latest report by Mercer|Mettl emphasizes how the use of technology could turn out to be a game-changer for defining efficiency and scalability in campus recruitment through shortlisting target campuses, building pre-placement engagement, shortlisting resumes, rolling out screening assessments, and conducting interviews.

Organizations that have revamped the campus hiring methodologies by adopting innovative technologies into the process have fared better than peers, as per the report. Companies that leveraged campus intelligence to enhance hiring strategy were able to increase their onboarding rate to 75 percent, the survey said.

Hence, as Wipro chalks down its plan to hire 12,000 students from Indian campuses, it also needs to revisit its campus hiring strategy and see how it can leverage more digital to improve the process.
