A recent report by TeamLease- India’s Job Market Salvation: Sales stated that the sales domain has a potential to create 2.5 million jobs by 2021. The study indicated that about 2.5 million jobs without any structural reforms, and 10 million jobs with structural changes, will be created by 2021.

This job creation potential is realized through a combination of macroeconomic, strategic and technological factors. For example, successful GST implementation can lead to up to 12% additional sales jobs in specific sectors while tapping FDI potential can lead to 50% more sales jobs.

Rituparna Chakraborty, Executive Vice President of TeamLease Services, was quoted in media saying, “We believe India’s job market salvation lies in growing sales job and that it has the potential to become the first choice of career for the youth who will come into the workforce tomorrow. This can be enabled through structural reforms.”

Some of the highlights from the report are:

  • The FMCG/FMCD sector alone has the potential to create 30% of the 2.5 million jobs while organized retail overall has the potential to create 50% of these jobs

  • There is a critical deficiency of sales skills. The report pegs sales skill deficiency in organized retail and tourism at 65% and, in travel and hospitality at 35%

  • Growth and investment, capacity creation along with expansion and innovation are the significant drivers of sales jobs in FMCG, FMCD, retail, and e-commerce

  • India has 1.5 million people working in sales. Out of which 62% are based in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

The report also suggested that there is a severe demand-supply mismatch across the sectors and it needs to be addressed by initiatives that promote skill development and cross-industry and cross-location talent mobility.
