CJI scraps weekday leaves for judges

Newly appointed Chief Justice of India, Justice Ranjan Gogoi has scrapped weekday leave for judges, except for emergencies.

To reduce the backlog of court cases, the Chief Justice has also stopped judges from taking leave travel and concession during work days. He has also advised the judges to plan their leaves and family holidays in advance by coordinating with "brother judges and chief justice."

The Supreme Court will take action against errant judges who break the holiday rule. India’s courts have a pile-up of over 3.3 crore cases and are hampered by a shortage of judges — the high courts operate 40% below capacity, said a media report.

Currently, the judges of Supreme Court get three LTCs a year as against two in a block of four years for top bureaucrats. The CJI has also asked the senior judges to fill up the long-pending vacancies as early as possible.

This strict step is likely to help the Indian courts to clear the pending cases at the earliest.
