The concern on mental health and well-being isn’t just the talk of the town for corporate professionals. According to Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay’s Student Wellness Centre (SWC), 2021-22 years has seen the number of scholars availing counselling sessions double in comparison to last year.

As per knowledge compiled by SWC and reported by Indian Express, 626 students utilised counselling sessions in tutorial 12 months in 2021-2022, almost twice the number of college students which availed them in 2020-2021, the number being 310. 

Out of those who availed this year, 210 college students are from Under Graduate programs whereas 203 are from Ph.D programs.  

The increase of students availing counselling sessions has been marked by the growing consciousness among students about the significance of psychological wellness and also the stress and pressure they may have faced during the COVID-19 curfews.

It is also noted that the taboo connected to psychological well-being seems to have faded a lot since the previous year, though the same cannot be said of other metropolitan cities. 

Dean of Students’ Affairs at IIT Bombay, Prof Tapanendu Kundu, told Indian Express, “ [Rise in student numbers] is the result of increased awareness. There could have been cases in the past too but it is good to see that more individuals are reaching out for help.”

Mentioning the initiatives taken up by the SWC to unfold consciousness, Prof Kundu also added, “Amid the pandemic when students were home, away from the campus, several reached out to the SWC. Additionally, with an increase in total students’ strength, we have expanded the facilities.”

Hima Anaredy, In-charge at SWC also commented that “even as the highest 48 per cent of scholars who reached out are seen dealing with emotional points, one cannot point out any one specific reason for emotional or academic concerns faced by students as many things are interconnected.”

Currently, around 20 percent of the scholars who visited the SWC have tutorial considerations, which have an effect on their emotional well-being which additionally impacts their lecturers.

The SWC, IIT Bombay,  has been making focused efforts in order that extra people get an early intervention. It proactively reached out to greater than 600 remote/quarantined college students to examine in the event that they required psychological assistance. 

The SWC has also utilised digital means to extensively connect with college students. They started their YouTube channel called “SWC Core Team @ IITB” which customises the psychological points confronted by IIT Bombay students and provides solutions to their predicaments.
