Uber selects Expedia’s Dara Khosrowshahi as the new CEO

Uber’s Board has selected the chief executive of Expedia, Dara Khosrowshahi to serve as its new Chief Executive Officer. He will replace Travis Kalanick, who was ousted as CEO after shareholders representing about 40 percent of the firm’s voting power signed a letter asking Travis to step down amid growing concern over his behavior and the behavior of senior managers under him.

Khosrowshahi was one of the three finalists for the chief executive role, along with Meg Whitman of Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Jeff Immelt of General Electric. However, Immelt withdrew his candidacy on Sunday. According to a media report, several Uber shareholders are delighted with the board’s choice of Khosrowshahi.

But for Khosrowshahi, the road ahead is not easy. He will be expected to restore the image of the company that has been severely damaged by a series of crises.

Khosrowshahi is an Iranian American businessman and has been the CEO of Expedia, a travel company. Previously, he has worked with IAC Travel, a division of InterActiveCorp. At IAC, he served as CEO before moving to Expedia. Before joining IAC, Khosrowshahi served as Vice President at Allen & Company LLC.  He received a B.A. in electrical engineering from Brown University in 1991.
