From brain drain to brain gain: India’s tech advantage

Recent restrictions on H-1B visas have sent ripples through the global tech landscape, prompting companies and policymakers to reassess their talent strategies. For India, home to one of the world’s largest pools of skilled professionals, this could be a turning point — an opportunity to retain talent, accelerate innovation, and reshape its role in global technology.

Rethinking global talent strategies 
According to Maya Nair, Executive Director at Grafton Recruitment, “The current restrictions on H-1B visas open up new opportunities for India and other countries with favourable immigration policies. Organisations can leverage this to build India as a leader in technology collaboration, providing immense growth opportunities for Indian professionals.” 
Nair suggests that companies deepen their investment in offshoring models for emerging technologies such as AI, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. Alternate visa options, including O1 visas for highly accomplished professionals and L1 visas for internal transfers, can also be explored. Strengthening capability centers and shared services hubs in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities can reduce costs while accessing top talent. Additionally, policies supporting productive remote work can help companies globally tap into India’s expertise. 
Localising innovation 
Anil Agarwal, CEO and Co-founder of InCruiter, stresses that the H-1B restrictions underscore the need for companies to stop viewing India solely as a source of talent. “With 1.5 million engineers graduating annually and digital adoption growing at 20% year-on-year, India itself is a global skills hub. Firms should localise innovation centres, build distributed teams, and retain expertise closer to emerging markets,” he says. 

Seizing the opportunity for domestic innovation


A slowdown in Indian migration to the US could spark a wave of domestic innovation and entrepreneurship. Anil notes, “India now has the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem. When high-skill professionals stay back, they channel energy into entrepreneurship and R&D. The opportunity is real, but scaling deep-tech research and access to growth capital will determine our readiness.”

Role of corporates and policymakers 

Both corporates and policymakers have a critical role to play in absorbing highly skilled talent. Nair observes that historically, talent mobility has benefitted both India and the U.S. Going forward, initiatives like Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat can provide a platform for sustainable economic growth. She adds, “A slowdown in US migration could see more professionals choosing to stay or return to India, increasing the skilled talent base and creating meaningful jobs while boosting revenue. This is also an opportunity for India to invest in R&D centers, diversify outsourcing regions, and drive digital innovation.” 

Agarwal adds, “Corporates must assign top talent to high-impact areas such as AI, fintech, and healthtech, rather than routine outsourcing. Policymakers should expand R&D tax credits, simplify cross-border capital flow, and strengthen university-industry linkages. This alignment ensures that high-skill talent not only remains in India but contributes to shaping global innovation from here.”

A strategic turning point


With over 70% of H-1B visas historically granted to Indians, the US faces the risk of losing technical competitiveness, while India stands at the threshold of transforming its tech landscape. By nurturing domestic talent, fostering innovation, and leveraging emerging technologies, India can position itself as a global innovation powerhouse.
