Indian firms ramp up AI leadership: 67% to hire CAIOs within 2 years – IBM

Indian enterprises are rapidly building momentum in AI leadership, with Chief AI Officers (CAIOs) emerging as pivotal drivers of strategy and execution, according to a new study by the IBM Institute for Business Value.

The study highlights a clear shift from experimentation to strategic adoption — with CAIOs taking a central seat at the leadership table, combining technical depth with executive acumen to accelerate AI-driven transformation.
Currently, 25% of Indian enterprises have appointed a CAIO, while 67% plan to do so within the next two years, underscoring India’s growing commitment to establishing dedicated AI leadership. The report also notes that organisations with a CAIO globally achieve 10% higher returns on AI investments, reinforcing the tangible value of aligning leadership with AI strategy.
“As Indian enterprises move from pilots to scaled AI adoption, the role of CAIOs will be central to their AI transformation journeys,” said Viswanath Ramaswamy, Vice President, Technology, IBM India & South Asia. “CAIOs will not only bridge the gap between business and technology but also set the strategic direction and keep teams aligned on shared goals. To succeed, CAIOs must develop a clear transformation roadmap with measurable KPIs, foster alignment with the C-suite, and focus on initiatives that deliver a sustainable competitive edge.”
Key highlights from the study
Strong C-Suite Support for AI Leadership
• 77% of CAIOs in India report strong C-suite backing, including 67% citing direct CEO support, indicating high organisational alignment.
• 80% of CAIOs are consulted by other CXOs on key AI decisions.
• 57% were appointed internally, showing growing internal AI talent pipelines.
• 60% report directly to the CEO or the Board of Directors, demonstrating elevated accountability and influence.

Broader mandates and implementation focus

Indian CAIOs are assuming expansive roles that span strategy, execution, and talent development.
• 70% define their organisation’s AI strategy.
• 57% drive change management and oversee AI implementation — about 10 percentage points higher than the global average. • 43% oversee upskilling, and 37% lead reskilling initiatives.
• 60% control AI budgets, ensuring tighter ownership and measurable outcomes.

Technical depth as a competitive edge

• 70% of Indian CAIOs have a background in data.
• 73% come from technology roles, while 50% bring innovation experience — enabling them to lead both technical and strategic transformation.

Adoption: From pilots to scale

  • 67% of Indian enterprises are currently investing in AI pilots.
  • However, strong leadership commitment and structured AI governance are expected to accelerate scaling in the near term.
  • Only 18% of Indian CAIOs report major implementation challenges, compared to 30% globally, indicating a more optimistic and execution-ready environment.

AI leadership as a growth imperative

With strong executive sponsorship, robust technical expertise, and expanding mandates, India’s CAIOs are emerging as central architects of enterprise AI transformation. As organisations move from pilots to scaled adoption, the CAIO’s role will be key to ensuring that AI investments deliver sustained business value and competitive advantage.
