Samsung brings back dual leadership, elevates TM Roh as co-CEO

Samsung Electronics has appointed its mobile chief, TM Roh, as co-CEO, reinstating the tech giant’s dual-leadership structure after months of uncertainty.

Samsung announced the move on Friday, saying Roh will head the device experience division, which includes the company’s smartphone, TV and home appliance businesses. Reuters reported that the appointment marks a return to the conglomerate’s traditional co-CEO system, which splits oversight of its consumer and chip divisions.

The company had been operating under a sole-CEO model following the sudden death of co-CEO Han Jong-Hee in March. Roh has effectively been leading the consumer business since April, Reuters noted, while retaining his role as president and head of Samsung’s mobile experience (MX) unit.

The leadership change follows Samsung’s decision earlier this month to install a new head of its business support office, a powerful strategy body that reports directly to chairman Jay Y. Lee. The Wall Street Journal has previously described the upgraded unit—long known internally as a “task force”—as a mini control tower coordinating priorities across Samsung Group, whose interests span semiconductors, smartphones, shipbuilding and pharmaceuticals.

The move to elevate Roh consolidates stability at a time of intensifying competition in global consumer electronics and a cyclical recovery in chips. It also signals Samsung’s intent to align product strategy more tightly across its device portfolio, particularly as AI-driven features become central to premium smartphones and connected appliances.

With its co-CEO structure restored and its internal strategy engine strengthened, Samsung is expected to accelerate decision-making ahead of a crucial year for both its handset and semiconductor businesses.
