New Delhi: The philanthropic arm of Bharti Enterprises has launched Nyaya Bharti, a programme to legally and financially support underprivileged undertrials that's driven by chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal. Half the yearly grant toward the initiative will come from a Rs 5-crore cut in Mittal's salary.
The trigger for the social initiative, the third by the Bharti Foundation, was Mittal's experience of the Patiala House Courts in 2013 for a case related to the allocation of telecom spectrum. He's since been discharged from the case. "I have gone to the court a few times in my own case. Once you go through a life experience like that, you feel that you are privileged to get access to the best legal counsel in the country. Most of the people don't have that kind of access," Mittal told the media on Thursday, explaining why he was venturing into an area that rarely sees philanthropic contributions. Many are stuck in India's overcrowded jails merely because bail is too high and they can't get good lawyers.
