Tata Asset Management elevates insider Anand Vardarajan to CEO and MD

Tata Asset Management, the investment manager of Tata Mutual Fund, has appointed Anand Vardarajan as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director with immediate effect, marking an internal leadership transition at the company.

Vardarajan moves into the top job after serving as Chief Business Officer and being part of Tata Asset Management’s leadership team since 2018.

He succeeds Prathit Bhobe, who stepped down as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director on July 7.

From business chief to the top job

Vardarajan brings more than 24 years of experience across banking, wealth management and financial services.

Before his elevation, he served as Chief Business Officer at Tata Asset Management and played a role in driving the company’s business growth. Prior to joining the company in 2018, he held leadership positions at ICICI Bank and Citibank.

The appointment places an existing member of the senior leadership team at the helm of the asset management company, giving Vardarajan prior experience with its business and operations as he takes charge.

Key details of the leadership change include:

  • Anand Vardarajan has been appointed CEO and MD with immediate effect.
  • He has been with Tata Asset Management’s leadership team since 2018.
  • He previously served as the company’s Chief Business Officer.
  • He has more than 24 years of experience in banking, wealth management and financial services.
  • Prathit Bhobe stepped down as CEO and MD on July 7.

Hemant Kumar takes over the business portfolio

The company has also appointed Hemant Kumar as Chief Business Officer as part of the leadership transition.

Kumar will oversee a broad set of business functions, including retail, institutional businesses, products, alliances, digital and data.

He brings more than 21 years of experience in banking and financial services. Before taking on the CBO role, Kumar served as Chief Distribution and Digital Officer at Tata Asset Management, where he led the company’s distribution and digital business.

His new mandate expands his responsibilities across multiple customer, product and technology-facing functions.

A two-level leadership transition

The appointments create a simultaneous change at two senior levels. Vardarajan moves from Chief Business Officer to CEO and MD, while Kumar steps into the CBO position with an expanded business mandate.

Commenting on the appointments, Rajiv Sabharwal, Chairman of Tata Asset Management, said Vardarajan’s leadership experience and understanding of the business, alongside Kumar’s track record in distribution and business growth, position the company for its next phase of growth.

The transition gives Tata Asset Management a new chief executive drawn from within its existing leadership ranks, while also bringing retail, institutional business, products, alliances, digital and data under Kumar’s remit.

With both appointments taking effect as part of the leadership transition, the focus now shifts to how the new management structure shapes the company’s business priorities under Vardarajan’s leadership.
