TCS forms AI unit and names Amit Kapur as its head

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India's largest IT services firm, has appointed Amit Kapur as the head of its newly formed AI and Services Transformation Unit, according to a company memo reviewed by Reuters on August 26, 2025.

The establishment of this dedicated AI unit underscores TCS's commitment to integrating artificial intelligence into its service offerings. The move comes at a time when Indian IT companies are intensifying efforts to adopt and offer AI-driven solutions to attract tech spending, which has remained subdued in recent quarters.

In the internal memo, TCS highlighted its ongoing initiatives in the AI domain, stating, "Over the last few years, TCS has made major forays on the AI front by scaling our capabilities, reskilling our ... , and deepening our partnerships."

Amit Kapur, a seasoned executive with two decades at TCS, will assume his new role in September 2025. Prior to this appointment, Kapur led TCS's UK and Ireland operations, where he played a pivotal role in expanding the company's footprint in the region.

His appointment is seen as a strategic move to leverage his extensive experience in driving business transformation and client engagement to spearhead TCS's AI initiatives.

This development follows TCS's announcement in July 2025 of plans to cut 12, ... a decision that has raised concerns about potential layoffs in India's $283 billion outsourcing sector as AI adoption deepens.

The formation of the AI and Services Transformation Unit positions TCS as a leader among Indian IT firms in dedicating a business unit solely to AI and allied technologies. This approach mirrors actions by U.S. competitors, such as Accenture, which have also established dedicated AI divisions to capitalize on the growing demand for AI solutions.
