Reimagining the role of pharmacists in an AI-powered healthcare future
On World Pharmacist Day 2025, industry leaders highlight how pharmacists must evolve with AI, data, and digital skills to deliver patient-centric care.
As the world marks World Pharmacist Day on September 25, the spotlight turns to the evolving role of pharmacists — professionals who stand at the frontline of healthcare, ensuring safe, effective, and accessible medication for millions. Beyond dispensing medicines, pharmacists are trusted advisors, bridging the gap between patients and the broader healthcare system. But in an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence (AI), their role is undergoing a profound transformation.
From dispensing to digital-first care
“Pharmacists will do a lot more than just dispense medicines,” said Jeevan Kasara, Director and CEO, Steris Healthcare. He emphasised that understanding AI applications, health informatics, and technology-driven decision-making will become essential at the patient care level. “The transition will include more counselling of patients, supporting them through complex treatment plans, and integrating digital tools into traditional practices. Pharmacists will need to merge technology with human assurance — enhancing both safety and peace of mind for patients.”
The rise of tech-ready pharmacists
Echoing this view, Amit Kumar, CEO of AkosMD India, highlighted that pharmacists of the future must be both “clinically sharp and tech-ready.” With AI generating vast amounts of patient-specific data, pharmacists will be called upon to interpret insights, monitor treatment adherence, and detect potential risks. “Moving beyond the traditional dispensing role, pharmacists must become data-literate, translate AI-driven insights into simple and actionable recommendations, and strengthen pharmacovigilance. Their ability to collaborate with doctors, technology teams, insurers, and other stakeholders will be crucial to maximising patient care,” Kumar noted.

The industry consensus is clear: the pharmacist’s role is being redefined to meet the dual demands of advanced technology and human-centric care. As healthcare systems worldwide pursue universal health coverage, pharmacists remain essential contributors — ensuring patients not only receive medication but also the right guidance, support, and trust at every step.
