Best places to work: Airbnb topples Google

Airbnb made it to the top, and did it in style. The company has displaced Google as the number 1 company to work for in the recently released Glassdoor ‘Best Places to Work 2016’ survey. This is the very first time that Airbnb appeared on the Glassdoor list of companies. The Glassdoor Employees' Choice Awards is in its eighth year, and is based entirely on employee feedback, honour various companies and leaders throughout the world. The awards cover a range of categories, including Best Places to Work and Highest Rated CEOs. Airbnb was founded in 2008 to facilitate rentals by homeowners. The company has expanded to more than 34,000 cities worldwide.

The remaining top four are: Bain & Company -- retained its rank in the second spot this year, Guidewire in 3, Hubspot is at 4th spot, and Facebook which was ranked 13 in 2015 has jumped to 5th position in 2016 list. LinkedIn also saw a huge rise in its ranking from 23 in 2015 to 6 in 2016. Twitter is tweeting at the 23rd spot, Twitter was at first position in 2014. Boston Consultancy Group is in the 7th spot in 2016, two spots down from previous year. Expedia is ranked 16, while RedBull is at 46 and Nike at 47. Chevron has gone down several notches to 39 from being ranked 6 in 2015. Nestle Purina is ranked at 9. Apple is listed at the 25th position. Adobe slipped one rank to number 19.

Tech companies have dominated the list, but the ranking showed a lot of diversity this time. Travel companies —Delta Airlines and Southwest Airlines both made the list, and religious organisation like The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was ranked 22.

Award winners are determined using feedback employees have shared on Glassdoor throughout the past year. Employees complete an anonymous company review that captures their overall job and company satisfaction, as well as qualitative insights into the best reasons to work at their company, along with what needs improvement.  Based on feedback employees share during the year long period of eligibility, Glassdoor then applies a proprietary algorithm to each award category. As part of the algorithm, Glassdoor considers the quality, quantity, and consistency of reviews.

The employees’ review should not take more than few minutes to complete. Only one company review per employee is accepted each year, and each review must meet Glassdoor's community guidelines.  For Glassdoor's Best Places to Work awards, the eligibility deadline is the first week in November.
