Emerging B-Schools 2014: IMT Hyderabad

Established in 2011, the Institute of Management Technology, Hyderabad carries the legacy of IMT Ghaziabad’s 30 years of excellence in business and management education and is poised to make a mark as a business school of international repute. It epitomizes the latest technology, research and advancement in pedagogy for delivery of knowledge.

Hyderabad has emerged as a major destination for IT/ ITeS, pharmaceutical, biotech, entertainment, financial services sectors and is also poised to witness growth in other sectors. Says Dr. V Panduranga Rao, Director, IMT Hyderabad, “The city being an IT hub attracts students from all over the country. In addition to this, our pedagogy is practice oriented and not merely bookish or exam oriented. We have cutting-edge curriculum designed to industry needs, strong infrastructure and top of the class faculty, which is a major attraction for students.”

Recognizing the need for a practical approach, 40-45 per cent of the curriculum and pedagogy is practice oriented. Courses are designed by faculty along with industry practitioners (senior and middle level executives from the industry), who decide on the topics, cases, projects to be done etc. Around one third of each course is delivered by these practitioners who share their experiences and bring a practical perspective to the classroom. IMT Hyderabad also encourages CEOs of various companies to come and interact with the students through an initiative called Business Orientation Programme, a two-week program. In this, around 15 CEOs visit the campus and share the challenges faced by them in their respective businesses with the students.

IMT also has a very robust internship program of 14-16 weeks, where the faculty handholds the students the entire time. Once a month, the faculty visits the student and provides them with any help required in terms of project work pertaining to the internship.

A unique method followed by the institute is called the ‘Cafeteria Approach’. In this, students are offered about 30-40 elective courses in which they are free to pick and choose the specialization he/she wants to excel in. This way, the student can achieve high academic excellence in one particular field choosing the same electives throughout the course. The student also has an option of choosing various electives and becoming a generalist. Students are also encouraged to participate in various projects over and above the curriculum like case writing competition with various other B-Schools. This gives them an opportunity to express their learning by means of performing in the competition. Faculty acts like a consulting force in this exercise.

Every year IMT Hyderabad also welcomes the students and faculty of Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs for a Social Enterprise Practicum in India. This is a course offered by Columbia University titled Social Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Development in India and involves bringing together 12-15 students from Columbia University along with 15 of Indian students for a three-week course. The course is a design-thinking experiential education curriculum developed to meet graduate student needs and interests in social entrepreneurship and sustainable development in the 21st Century. In addition to multimedia lectures, lab-work, field work and site visits, the course curriculum includes a series of applied consulting projects, in which students undertake short management consulting projects for an Indian social enterprise or organization focused on social entrepreneurship and innovation in social service delivery in a range of sectors. It gives foreign students an opportunity to experience the Indian social setting and promotes cross-cultural interaction.

Dr. Rao says, “Our goal to achieve excellence in imparting education, grooming leadership, entrepreneurial talent and research, is accomplished through our top class faculty members, cutting edge curriculum and innovative pedagogy.”
