There are several ways for low morale to creep into the office environment. Some of your employees bring it from home. Whatever the reason is, it hurts the productivity and increases the sick days.

Does employee satisfaction matter? In a study published in the Journal of Communication Management, researchers found that while morale can be very low due to long hours, high workloads and fear of redundancy, the employees in the retail industry still work hard to keep the customers satisfied and boost the company’s profit.

Does this mean that employee morale doesn’t matter? Absolutely not. Another study found that an unhappy workplace increases heart disease and depression rates. According to series of studies that examined the overall employee satisfaction across industries, the employees who like their jobs are twice as likely to report effective money management, strong relationships, decent community engagement, and good health. As it turns out, they are thriving in their private lives, too.

But, how do you deal with employees who are not motivated to work? There are several ways for low morale to creep into the office environment. Some of your employees bring it from home. Whatever the reason is, it hurts the productivity and increases the sick days.

Why Low Employee Morale Occurs

It’s not always the employer’s fault. Most of the time, however, it is. Workers who are not getting paid enough or are mistreated in the workplace will certainly have low morale. The lack of enthusiasm may occur for other reasons, too:

Lack of Vision of Growth

If the company is not growing, the employees feel stuck. The workers, no matter how well they are being paid, will get bored and demotivated doing the same tasks every single day. Research shows that development is crucial for staff retention. If you don’t keep the employees engaged through the vision of growth, their morale will be low and the best ones will eventually start looking for a job elsewhere.

  • Unfair Treatment from Other Employees

One negative person in the office can bring everyone’s morale down. It may be an underperforming employee or an overly judgmental person. This is a problem for the entire staff.

  • Lack of Clear Expectations

When someone comes to work, they want to know what they are expected to do. The lack of clear expectations set by the management will seriously affect their performance.
  • Change in Leadership

Changes at supervising level can affect the morale of the overall workplace. They know that the culture will probably change. That makes them unconfident.

There are many other reasons for discouragement among the employees, but those were the most common ones. The first step to solution is identifying the problem. Once you know where the issue is coming from, you can start making improvements.

6 Effective Ways to Face Low Employee Morale

  • Develop a Connection

The leader has to spend more time with the employees. With that strategy, you’ll catch you’ll act before the situation gets too serious. When everyone knows you’re there to help when needed, they will appreciate the support. They will feel free to speak up and share their ideas. When they see you work with them, they will be motivated to do better.

  • Challenge them to Grow

The mere thought of repeating the same tasks day after day makes your employees unmotivated. Think of something to spice things up. Introduce a new project. Promote the best workers. As your company grows, the opportunities for your employees have to grow, too. You want to see themselves working for you in future. You want to make that vision for the future motivating enough.

  • Acknowledge Good Work

Robert Wood, Project Manager from ResumesPlanet, shares his experience: “I noticed that low morale mostly comes in periods when the workers are getting no feedback. This has happened on a long-term project, when I didn’t feel the need to update them on a daily basis. When I saw the problem and started sharing my impressions on their work more often, they got more engaged.”
Show appreciation for their hard work and you’ll motivate them to carry on.

  • Deal with the Individuals Who Ruin the Morale

You remember those negative individuals we mentioned earlier? You mustn’t let their attitude affect the overall morale in the workplace. Talk to them. Suggest ways on how to resolve the issues that are bothering them. If nothing works and you can’t get them disciplined, you’ll have to let the bad employees go, for the sake of the good ones and for the wellbeing of your company.

  • Appreciate Transparency

When there’s a problem with morale, you can’t pretend it doesn’t exist. You must be transparent and honest. You should expect the same thing from your employees. Ask them why they are having issues with the performance and motivation. Tell them when those issues are present and work on the solutions together.

  • Maintain the Positive Vibe

Setting challenges are important, but so is stress management. You must never make the work-life balance impossible to maintain for your employees. The positive vibe in the office is important. You don’t want to impose excessive working hours or impossible goals. If you have a greater workload, it’s time to hire new employees. That’s the key to running a calm company.

  • Every problem has a solution. First, you need to recognize the problem. Are there issues with low morale in your company? Do you have any ideas on how to deal with them? The above-listed tips should give you a starting point.
