From pioneering infrastructure to reimagining AI-powered enterprises, their role has expanded far beyond problem-solving. Today, engineers are designing scalable, resilient, and sustainable solutions that anticipate tomorrow’s challenges and fuel inclusive growth.

Every year, nearly 1.5 million engineering graduates step into the workforce in India, contributing to everything from roads and railways to digital platforms and new-age technologies. Their work drives economic growth while laying the foundation for a future-ready world.

On Engineers’ Day 2025, People Matters spoke with industry leaders across technology, talent, and innovation to explore how engineers are shaping a sustainable future where human ingenuity and AI converge.

AI as a catalyst for engineering excellence 

“The role of engineers has never been more profound,” says Selvakumaran Mannappan, Chief Operating Officer, Birlasoft. 

With AI compressing design cycles from weeks to hours and enabling predictive insights through digital twins and simulations, engineers are redefining how industries build resilience and sustainability.

“From reactive troubleshooters, they have transformed into lifecycle optimisers, driving efficiency and circular innovation across enterprise systems, cloud platforms, and digital infrastructure. At Birlasoft, this convergence of IT and engineering excellence is our foundation to empower sustainable, scalable, and future-ready enterprises,” Mannappan adds.

From problem-solvers to orchestrators 

Echoing this sentiment, Sonali Kochar, Senior Vice President of DE, Encora, highlights how the engineer’s role has expanded in profound ways.

“They are no longer just solving isolated problems; they are designing systems that must be scalable, sustainable, and resilient in the face of constant change. Engineers now have digital colleagues—AI agents that extend their reach, accelerate innovation, and free them to focus on judgment, ethics, and design. This shift transforms the engineer from a coder or builder into an orchestrator of AI-enabled ecosystems.” 

Building systems with ethics and purpose 

According to Hari Krishnan Nair, Co-founder, Great Learning, engineering excellence today must balance efficiency with fairness. 

“Engineering can no longer be defined by problem-solving alone; it requires designing systems that are scalable, inclusive, and resilient. By embedding ethical considerations and long-term social impact into every design, engineers can ensure innovations drive meaningful progress. They are shaping a future where technology advances in harmony with human and societal needs.”

At Mphasis, engineers embody this spirit by harnessing AI-powered platforms like NeoZeta and NeoCrux to modernise critical systems.

“Their ingenuity and dedication demonstrate how engineering excellence delivers lasting impact—strengthening industries, enabling businesses, and laying the foundation for a resilient, inclusive future,” says Ravi Vasantraj, Global Delivery Head, Mphasis. 

Similarly, at CitiusTech, engineers are redefining healthcare innovation. “Every line of code and every solution has the potential to empower the health ecosystem and save lives,” says Sowmya Santhosh, CHRO, CitiusTech. “Their work is purposeful, grounded in solving real challenges that impact human life.”

Engineering for sustainability 

At Mindsprint, engineers focus on three dimensions, explains Balasubramanian Kumarappan, VP – Analytics: 

• Architecting for longevity & impact: Designing resilient systems that evolve with changing needs.
• Embedding ethics, transparency & inclusion: Ensuring fairness, reducing bias, and protecting privacy.
• Fueling innovation with purpose: Leveraging AI, IoT, blockchain, and digital twins to conserve resources and improve quality of life.

Rajeev Jain, COO, Altimetrik, reinforces this view: “Engineers hold the responsibility of shaping systems that will define how societies progress. By leveraging emerging technologies, they can design solutions that safeguard resources, reduce costs, and enable inclusive, resilient growth.”

Dr. Vishal Shah, VP – Leadership & Organisational Development, Indegene, sums it up: “Engineers shape the future by creating solutions that last. From AI-powered design to ethical, sustainable innovation, engineers are no longer simply solving problems—they are shaping the future itself. Their work ensures that technology not only advances but also serves humanity with purpose, responsibility, and vision.
