The appointments come as New Zealand’s national carrier deals with delayed aircraft deliveries, ongoing engine issues and higher fuel costs.

Air New Zealand will appoint former Air India chief executive Campbell Wilson and former chief financial officer Robert McDonald as directors, with both set to join the board on 24 September, Reuters reported.

The appointments come as New Zealand’s national carrier deals with delayed aircraft deliveries, ongoing engine issues and higher fuel costs linked to the conflict in the Middle East.

Wilson brings aviation experience

Wilson, who was born in New Zealand, brings more than 30 years of experience across the aviation industry.

He stepped down as Air India CEO in April 2026 after nearly four years at the helm. His tenure came as the airline faced persistent losses and increased regulatory scrutiny following last year’s crash that killed 260 people.

Before joining Air India, Wilson was the founding CEO of Scoot, Singapore Airlines’ low-cost carrier.

He spent much of his career at Singapore Airlines, where he helped establish Scoot as a more informal and distinct brand within the wider group.

McDonald adds board and finance experience

McDonald currently chairs Contact Energy and serves as a director of FleetPartners Group.

His experience across finance, governance and listed companies will add further commercial expertise to Air New Zealand’s board as the airline manages a challenging operating environment.

Airline faces operational pressures

The new appointments come as Air New Zealand continues to deal with aircraft delivery delays and persistent engine problems.

Higher fuel costs are adding to the pressure, with disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict creating further uncertainty for airlines.

Wilson and McDonald will formally join the board at Air New Zealand’s annual shareholders’ meeting on 24 September.
