Ed-tech startup Unacademy names ex-Xiaomi executive Karan Shroff as VP Marketing

Head of Brand Marketing at Xiaomi India Karan Shroff has quit as and joined educational technology start-up Unacademy as Vice President-Marketing. He resigned from his position at Xiaomi this week and joined Unacademy immediately thereafter.

In his new role, Shroff will be responsible for planning marketing strategies for the educational technology startup to make it a bigger brand in the coming time. He will be based out of Bengaluru.

Shroff joined Xiaomi India in July 2015 and was responsible for the brand’s advertising, ATL campaigns, creative marketing, and overall brand positioning. Prior to Xiaomi, Shroff has worked with companies such as Herbalife International India Pvt Ltd, Bertelsmann, Wizcraft International Entertainment Pvt. Ltd and Pixies Events.

Xiaomi has seen a slew of movements this year. In July, two executives from its sub-brand POCO- namely Donovan Sung, former global spokesperson and Jai Mani, head of product of the POCO division called it quits. In the same month, the Chinese smartphone maker also roped in ex-Myntra head Muralikrishnan B as the new Chief Operating Officer on board. 

Shroff joins Unacademy at a time when the startup is betting big on expansion. In June this year, it raised $50 Mn in a funding round from Steadview Capital, Sequoia India, Nexus Venture Partners, and Blume Ventures to increase the number of educators, add more exam courses, improve its product and expand the team.
